Discussion questions

1. Read John 6:22-35. Take some notes as to what the passage says about the Bread of Life. Who is the Bread of Life? What are some attributes of the Bread of Life?
  • The Bread of Life is Jesus. This isn't just a loaf of bread -- instead, the Bread of Life is a person. God is interested in us personally.
  • The Bread of Life comes from Heaven -- note in verse 32 that Jesus refers to Himself as the "bread from heaven" and in verse 33, He also uses the term, "Bread of God." He is indeed our nourishment.
  • The Bread of Life embodies authority. Jesus is able to save any and all who come to Him for forgiveness and eternal life in Heaven. God is the giver of all good gifts (see James 1:17).

2. Read John 6:47-51. What is the promise that Jesus mentions? How does He provide this promise?
  • The Bread of Life brings eternal life. Jesus compares Himself to the manna that the LORD provided the Israelites in the wilderness. God provides for us both naturally and supernaturally. Here, Jesus makes clear that He provides eternal life.
  • The Bread of Life is greater than natural food. Jesus mentions that the bread in the wilderness was temporary, and now those people have long passed. The life that Jesus gives is eternal -- literally, forever.
  • The Bread of Life provides His promise through costly sacrifice -- As mentioned in verse 51, Jesus mentions that He would give His flesh up in order to give life to the world. All who believe on Him will have everlasting life (see John 3:16).

3. How can you partake in the Bread of Life?
If you go down a few more verses to John 6:53, Jesus mentions that we all have no life within us unless we partake of the His Flesh and His Blood. Whenever we take Communion (Eucharist) as the Body of Christ, we are proclaiming His Death until He returns. He gave His Body and Blood for us, sacrificing Himself to pay for our sins. We deserve the penalty of sin, because we fall into sin. All have sinned and fall short of God's glory (see Romans 3:23). Jesus took on that penalty to all who will believe in Him and accept that sacrifice. Respond to Him in faith! His work is done, complete, finished! Know Jesus!
